Chiropractic has been around for over 120 years. Dr. David Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment in 1895. Because Chiropractic emphasizes the use of your body to fight pain and disease, the medical community has been reluctant to embrace Chiropractic as a legitimate form of healthcare. In recent decades, there has been a tremendous shift towards alternative healthcare. Americans are more health conscious and now look for non-medicinal and non-surgical treatments due to prescription drug abuse and unnecessary surgical procedures. Chiropractic is the largest group of alternative healthcare practitioners. Chiropractic has gained more legitimacy and greater acceptance among medical physicians and health plans in the U.S.,[29] and evidence-based medicine has been used to review research studies and generate practice guidelines. Chiropractic will offer pain relief but more importantly, prevention, proper nutrition and wellness are emphasized. For several decades the Chiropractic profession has advanced through evidence and science-based research. As Americans are frustrated with the current healthcare system, Chiropractic is becoming more mainstream because of its emphasis on preventative care rather than 'sick care'.
